Federal spending cuts canceled a $200,000 grant meant to fund paid trail maintenance from May until October, leaving the Deschutes Trails Coalition scrambling to cover the gap — local officials warn that safety and ongoing repairs on national forest trails may suffer without full federal support.

More than 300 volunteers joined the 32nd annual Spring Thing event at Smith Rock State Park on Saturday to repair trails and restore native habitat — they worked on 25 projects including the Misery Ridge Trail and ended the day with food, vendors, yoga, and a raffle.
