- ➤ The first-ever Bend Bike Festival and Swap is underway at The Pavilion this weekend; it began on Friday with free admission, gear consignment, local vendors, live music and food trucks + all proceeds support Bend Endurance Academy’s mission to help more kids get outdoors. Central Oregon Daily

- ➤ Skier Jonathan Friedland fell near the Outback chairlift at Mt. Bachelor and hurt his leg badly—his girlfriend Ellie quickly used her jacket and Apple headphone cords to slow the bleeding until ski patrol arrived, and he was flown to St. Charles Medical Center where he is recovering on crutches. ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Bird Alliance of Oregon said that 60,000 birds normally fly over Multnomah County nightly but that number jumped to 700,000 on Wednesday and millions will migrate through Oregon from April until late May as birds head north to Canadian breeding grounds. Local bird watchers can visit many spots to see the action — from tufted puffins at Cannon Beach to diverse woodpeckers in Sisters. Bend Bulletin
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Starting April 27, Deschutes County and other agencies will limit road access for projects including the Hamehook Road Bridge replacement, with China Hat Road and FS Road 1815 closed for forest thinning and Lower Bridge Way near U.S. 97 detoured until May 15 — work will take place weekday mornings and afternoons with flaggers managing lane closures. Deschutes Market Road is closing at Yeoman Road for roundabout construction while Cascade Lakes Highway and Paulina Lake Road remain closed for winter and are expected to reopen before Memorial Day, weather permitting — drivers should follow detour routes. - ➤ Bend City Council published a proposal to raise the transportation fee on utility bills, with residents facing an increase of $4 to $6 per month and businesses paying more—approval may come after a May 7 public hearing with new charges starting July 1. Bend Bulletin
