COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Bend fourth grader Kai Bamford — who suffered a brain bleed and underwent multiple surgeries — is recovering as the community hosts a day-long fundraiser today at Abby's Pizza from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. with 20% of proceeds directed to his family’s medical expenses.  Central Oregon Daily
  • Hundreds of youth and volunteers from the Heart of Oregon Corps gathered at Dry Canyon Park in Redmond on Global Youth Service Day to remove hazardous structures with sharp barbed wire and repair park features—ensuring the area remains safe for public use.  KTVZ

CULTURE NEWS

  • Trinity Lutheran School opened its new performing arts center off Empire Avenue this weekend. The school staged Annie on Friday at 7:00 p.m., will perform it today at 2:00 and 7:00 p.m., and will have a Sunday show at 2:00 p.m. in a venue that seats 450.  Central Oregon Daily

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Bend-La Pine School District said a governor’s order to stop cutting instructional hours may force schedule changes and add budget strain since parent-teacher conferences and staff training no longer count; district leaders are asking state lawmakers for clearer guidance.  Central Oregon Daily

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • After a record-low snowpack triggered a drought emergency, Bend urges residents and businesses to conserve water by following recommended watering schedules & inspecting irrigation systems. The Water Conservation Program also offers free consultations and rebates to help maintain local water supplies through the summer.  Central Oregon Daily
  • Crews with the Deschutes National Forest burned 363 acres on Friday south of Bend (11 miles from city center and 4 miles east of Lava Butte) as part of the Cabin Butte Vegetation Management Project to reduce wildfire risk. The US Forest Service extended China Hat closure through April 2027.  Central Oregon Daily
  • Friday, Sunriver Nature Center held its first Bio Blitz where students and community members documented local plants and animals using the iNaturalist app + added their data to a city-wide four-day challenge. The team captured species from riparian areas, meadows, and forests in Sunriver.  Central Oregon Daily
  • Think Wild released a rehabilitated bald eagle in a field north of Prineville today after a month of care for its chest injury. Volunteers watched it take flight before two other eagles joined; the organization also announced a Wildlife Baby Shower fundraiser on May 9 at Oregon Spirit Distillers.  KTVZ

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Electric vehicle drivers will access 126 new fast charging ports from 24 stations planned along major highways near Bend, Sisters, Prineville, and Madras. The Oregon Department of Transportation selected seven companies to install the stations with $16.7 million in federal grants, and contracts will finalize in the coming months.  KTVZ

HEALTH NEWS

  • Federal regulators reissued a recall of about 429,000 Casely wireless power banks after recent reports of overheating and explosions, including one fatal incident; consumers should stop using the units and request free replacements by following company instructions.  Central Oregon Daily

    Oregon is creating universal health care legislation. This Town Hall is currently the only in-person chance in Central Oregon to hear from the people writing the state's legislation and to ask questions/provide comments. This will be historic legislation. If you are interested in the issue, support universal health care, or have questions about it, you have to be at this event to make your voice heard.
