- ➤ More than 60 guests with special needs danced Saturday at Riverhouse Lodge in Bend at the first Permission to Dance Prom. Prom committee members said the event featured live music, a photo booth, food and prizes and they plan to hold it again next year. Central Oregon Daily
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ A 21-year-old man was arrested outside Silver Rail Elementary School Monday morning at 11:45 a.m. after 911 calls reported an armed man near a home on Whitetail Street, and officers found he was unarmed when they took him into custody on suspicion of harassment, restraining order violation, and resisting arrest. - ➤ A Bend driver, Thomas Lee Downs Jr., 38, was taken into custody on Monday after his truck crashed through the Deschutes County Sheriff’s Office gate and hit a wall Saturday—he now faces charges of DUII, reckless driving, criminal mischief and violating parole with damage estimated at over $80,000. - ➤ Service providers Chuck Hemingway and Eric Garrity along with four homeless residents filed in U.S. District Court in Eugene seeking a temporary restraining order to block the May 1 closure of China Hat Road—set by the Forest Service to support forest restoration and public safety. KTVZ
- ➤ On Monday the Sunriver Service District named Peter J. Rasic as the new chief of the Sunriver Police Department after he served as a lieutenant with the El Monte Police Department in California. He brings nearly 30 years of law enforcement and community engagement experience to lead Sunriver's public safety efforts. KTVZ
- ➤ Homeless service providers Chuck Hemingway and Eric Garrity along with four local homeless residents filed a lawsuit in U.S. District Court seeking a temporary restraining order to block the Forest Service from closing China Hat Road on May 1—an order they hope will prevent abrupt displacement. KTVZ
- ➤ Three new buildings form Bend’s new $130 million public works campus built on a 35-acre site in northeast Bend (including two warehouse-style structures and an administrative headquarters) to bring five city departments together. The project, funded by the sale of the Boyd Acres Road facility lease, debt financing, and land sales at Juniper Ridge (350 acres planned for light industrial development), will finish construction this fall so staff can move from the old facility.
