- ➤ Mark Jenkins, who has lived in a trailer in the forest for two years off China Hat Road, found an apartment at Cleveland Commons just before the U.S. Forest Service clears the area on May 1—local outreach services helped him sign the lease and secure funds for the required deposit. ECONOMY NEWS
- ➤ Visit Central Oregon announced Tuesday that seven local tourism projects will receive $280,000 in grants from the Central Oregon Future Fund after reviewing 19 applications requesting over $800,000. The projects range from a new museum exhibition to an adaptive golf initiative — each designed to boost tourism for both visitors and residents. KTVZ
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Five Central Oregon schools earned Recognized ASCA Model Program certification from the American School Counselor Association, including Redmond (Sage Elementary and Obsidian Middle) and Sisters (Sisters Elementary and Sisters Middle) plus Bend Caldera High, making them the only schools east of the Cascades to receive this honor. The High Desert Education Service District supported the four schools over two years while Caldera High pursued certification independently. KTVZ
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ A young female bald eagle was found injured in a field east of Redmond on March 16 and was taken to Think Wild in Bend where it received surgery on March 20 to repair a fractured femur and other injuries—she is recovering but her prognosis remains guarded. If healing goes normally, the bird could be released in six to eight weeks. The Oregonian
- ➤ The Deschutes National Forest announced Tuesday it is seeking public input on its Fuels Maintenance Treatments Project covering nearly 153,000 acres across eastside forest lands, including about 91,000 acres in wildland urban interface areas. The project uses treatments such as thinning, mowing, mastication and prescribed burning—public comments are accepted until May 8. KTVZ

- ➤ Oregon will soon receive over $4 million from a $335 million nationwide opioid settlement with drugmaker Mylan — the funds will support addiction treatment and prevention services. The Oregonian
- ➤ Bend Park and Recreation District will hold an open house on April 22 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at its office on SW Columbia St. to share a $1 million plan for updating Sawyer Park with relocated parking, restored habitat and improved accessibility + steps to lessen impacts on cultural and historic sites, with work set to finish by summer 2026. - ➤ Hospice of Redmond will host Camp Sunrise at Suttle Lake Camp from June 20th to 22nd for children ages 7 to 12 and will add a Teen Grief Retreat on June 21st for teens ages 13 to 17 to help them cope with loss in Central Oregon. The programs, offered free to families in Deschutes, Jefferson and Crook counties — applications are now available on the Hospice of Redmond website. Central Oregon Daily
