COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Building a Better Bend will kick off its 2026 lecture series with a ‘Happy City’ talk by urban planning expert Mitchell Reardon on May 7th at OSU-Cascades in the Ray Hall Atrium. Tickets cost $10 and space is limited (presented by First Interstate Bank).  KTVZ

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Mt. Bachelor ski area announced it will take over the former LOGE property on Century Drive and rebrand it as Trailhead Lodge—a 70-room basecamp for outdoor enthusiasts. Reservations will open early summer and the lodge will offer year-round access for skiing + hiking and community events just minutes from downtown.  Bend Bulletin

CULTURE NEWS

  • Multiple galleries in Central Oregon are showcasing local art exhibits this week. Visitors can see woven art at Amejko Artistry (321 SW Powerhouse Drive in Bend) and mixed-media paintings in Madras, Sunriver, and Prineville.  Bend Bulletin

FINANCE NEWS

  • IRS warns nearly 20,000 Oregonians that if they do not file their 2022 federal tax return by April 15, they risk losing a median refund of about $670 (part of $17 million in unclaimed funds) that would otherwise be issued; local taxpayers should gather documents and file promptly.  The Oregonian

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Cascades East Transit will expand service beginning May 4 by running Routes 1 and 4 on 3rd Street—every 15 minutes—and adding a Central Library stop on May 11. A Jefferson County route will launch May 5 to connect Warm Springs, Madras and Kah-Nee-Ta Hot Springs Resort with Simnasho.  Bend Bulletin
  • The U.S. Forest Service cleared the China Hat encampment near Bend last year, forcing hundreds to leave belongings they could not retrieve despite repeated phone calls (residents lost essential items and vehicles). Local advocates warn that shelter challenges will persist as Juniper Ridge is set to close (by June 2027).  The Oregonian
  • Cascades East Transit will boost bus frequency on Bend routes starting May 4th, with Routes 1 and 4 running every 15 minutes during peak hours — a new Jefferson County route connecting Warm Springs and Madras will launch May 5th, and a Central Library bus stop will open May 11th.  KTVZ

HEALTH NEWS

  • A new OHSU study finds that low-income adults with diabetes risk poorer blood sugar control and rising complications when Medicaid coverage is interrupted, a concern as up to 200,000 Oregonians may lose care under stricter rules. Researchers analyzed records from over 39,000 patients to reveal fast health declines.  The Oregonian
  • State data show that 637 new prescriptions were written under Oregon's Death with Dignity Act last year, a 5% increase from 2024, reflecting a growing trend among terminally ill patients receiving hospice care at home; more than 5,500 people have used the law since 1997.  The Oregonian
