COMMUNITY NEWS

  • KPOV celebrated its 20th anniversary and held a spring membership drive from April 11 to April 19, 2024 to raise $40,000 for station upgrades—supporters matched donations up to $14,440 as the volunteer-run radio stayed true to its mission of connecting Central Oregon with local news and arts. The station, based in Bend, has served the community since 2005.  KTVZ
  • Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Oregon was named the national organization's 2024 Platinum Award winner (one of 17 agencies among over 230 recognized for excellence) and served 221 youth with one-to-one mentoring in the past year through its J Bar J Youth Services program.  KBND

ECONOMY NEWS

  • AAA Oregon-Idaho reported Tuesday that pump prices in Bend increased by 7 cents to reach $3.70 a gallon as stations switch to more expensive summer-blend fuel — spring break drivers will still pay about 40 cents less than a year ago.  KTVZ

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Deschutes and Willamette National Forests announced that reservations for the Central Cascades Wilderness Permit system will open Tuesday, April 1—overnight permits are required for trips in Mount Jefferson, Mount Washington and Three Sisters Wilderness areas from June 15 through Oct. 15. Visitors must reserve permits solely on Recreation.gov for trips of up to 14 days with no more than 12 people per group.  KTVZ

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Oregon Senate voted Monday to ban landlords from asking about or sharing tenants’ immigration status—an effort to protect immigrant renters from discrimination. The bill now moves to the state House—where it is expected to pass quickly.  The Oregonian
  • Gov. Tina Kotek sent a letter to utility regulators asking how they will keep electric and gas bills affordable amid rising rates and cost pressures from wildfires and inflation—she also requested updates on grid modernization and clean energy efforts to handle growing energy use from new heavy users like data centers.  Central Oregon Daily
  • Rep. Emerson Levy of Bend introduced Alyssa's Law, a bill that requires school districts to consider installing wireless or wearable panic alarms, which passed the Oregon House Tuesday with a 50-0 vote — and it now moves to the Senate. Funding is available through the School Safety and Emergency Management program, which offers each school a reimbursement of $2,000.  KTVZ
  • A busy intersection at Deschutes Market Road and Yeoman Road near Pine Nursery Park will close starting April 9 for a four-month project to build a new roundabout—Yeoman Road will be extended east. Drivers are advised to use alternate routes such as NE Purcell Boulevard and Hamehook Road during the construction.  Central Oregon Daily
