  • BrightSide Animal Center will host its Brighter Futures Gala on May 2 at the High Desert Music Hall in Redmond — a fundraiser with dinner, cocktails and auctions to support local animal care. Early bird tickets are available until March 15.  KTVZ
  • Webfoot Home Improvements is accepting nominations for its annual Project Serious Giveaway to help an unsung neighbor in need — the winner, receiving $20,000 in home improvements, will be selected with community votes and announced on April 7 as nominations remain open through March 20.  Central Oregon Daily
  • Bend schools honor late 10-year-old Tegen Crooks by continuing Sparrow fundraising events to support his family. Bend High will host a dodgeball tournament Friday, Mar. 13 at 6:30 p.m., a 3-on-3 basketball tournament Saturday, Mar. 14, and a memorial pageant on April 19.  Central Oregon Daily

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Snow surveyors report record-low snowpack at three Oregon sites this winter and warn the historic drought may soon affect water supply; a follow-up survey is scheduled for April 1 — hydrologists stress the ongoing water concerns.  Central Oregon Daily
  • On March 6, the Oregon Legislature approved a bill for a statewide battery recycling program funded by battery makers to help reduce fires caused by discarded lithium batteries—this law requires battery producers to set up recycling sites within 15 miles of nearly all residents and to fund public education.  Bend Bulletin

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Oregon law allows homeowners to trim tree branches that extend onto their property if they limit work to their own side and avoid damaging the tree; permits are required for street or heritage trees, and documenting the overhang with a written neighbor notice is advised.  Central Oregon Daily
  • A guest column praises Bend’s junipers for their shade + wildlife benefits and urges residents to help keep them protected despite debates over changes to the tree code. Comments can be submitted until Wednesday, Mar. 11 as the city rethinks its urban forest priorities.  Bend Bulletin
  • Oregon lawmakers passed SB1517B, a bill that restores liability waivers for ski areas, outfitters and recreation groups on March 5 and 6 to help control rising insurance costs, and it now heads to Gov. Tina Kotek for her signature.  Central Oregon Daily

  • Sherwood edged West Linn 49-41 on Friday night in a key state playoff game and earned their first quarterfinal berth at the Chiles Center — while Benson upset top seed Southridge in overtime on a last-second three pointer, marking the first No. 1 elimination since seeding began in 2014.  The Oregonian
