COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Latino Community Association is offering free tax help to low-income families with Spanish-speaking preparers at offices in Bend, Redmond, Madras and Prineville, and experts will guide locals on new child tax credit rules (a valid social security number is now required).  Central Oregon Daily
  • Boys and Girls Clubs of Bend is launching its first Saturday child care program starting Saturday, offering care for youth ages 5-18 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. during the school year to support working parents. Families can also register through the My Club Hub portal.  KTVZ
  • Cascades East Transit launched a Community Movement Fund to offer free bus tickets for those who cannot afford the new $2 fare. Local service organizations + shelters have tickets available so riders can get to jobs, appointments, and stores.  Central Oregon Daily
  • Megan Geiss from Bend joined the Family Access Network Board of Directors Tuesday to support its mission of connecting local children and families with essential resources. With a background in digital marketing and youth initiatives (she previously served at the Boys and Girls Club), her appointment strengthens FAN’s work in schools.  KTVZ

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A $14.5 million wrongful death complaint was filed Jan. 30 in Deschutes County by the estate of youth ski coach Brian Thomas Roberts, who died in an avalanche on Mt. Bailey during a 2025 cat-skiing trip near Diamond Lake after guides reportedly told skiers to ignore avalanche warnings.  Central Oregon Daily

  • Local business owners are adapting to a winter with only 28% of normal snowpack by shifting their sales and events; Powderhouse launched an early sale and is building Base Camp for a spring opening — local tours now offer stargazing and Winter Volcano experiences.  Bend Bulletin
  • Bend’s dining scene is expanding with nine new culinary ventures opening from early to mid-2026. The Hudson chophouse will open in the former space at 900 Wall while Powder Hound Doughnuts and Bamboo Sushi are set for March openings on Galveston Ave and NW Oregon, offering fresh flavors for diners.  Bend Bulletin

  • Hannah Juanita will perform with The Shining Dimes at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 5 at Silver Moon Brewing in Bend, and tickets cost $14.38.  Bend Bulletin
  • Over a dozen Central Oregon bands will perform at High Desert Music Hall in Redmond on Saturday, Feb. 7 to honor Grateful Dead members Bob Weir and Phil Lesh with continuous music plus tributes; attendees pay 15 canned food items or $15 to support nonprofit NeighborImpact.  Source Weekly

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Crude oil prices climbed to over $65 a barrel last week, raising gas prices to about $3.48 per gallon in Oregon; Triple-A said the surge came from U.S.-Iran tensions plus severe winter storms disrupting production.  KTVZ
  • AAA reported that crude oil prices hit four-month highs above $65 per barrel last week, and seasonal refinery maintenance and the switch to summer-blend gas lifted Bend's average price 13 cents to $3.46 a gallon today (with Oregon's average at $3.48) amid tight regional supplies.  KTVZ

  • Deschutes County Sheriff Ty Rupert will hold a town hall in Bend at VFW Hall Post 1643 on Wednesday, Mar. 18 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Past forums spurred added patrols near schools + his meeting will let residents share concerns to shape law enforcement priorities.  KTVZ
